HZ info,The Pittsburgh Paints Company announced that its woodcare brands, OLYMPIC® Stains and PITTSBURGH PAINTS & STAINS®, have selected Black Oak as the 2026 Stain Color of the Year.

A warm, versatile neutral with deep forest tones, Black Oak is bold but balanced, modern yet familiar. Inspired by naturally aged wood, it brings warmth and depth to outdoor spaces, encouraging homeowners to stain with intention across seasons and styles.

“In a world where homeowners are moving away from quick fixes and toward smarter, longer-lasting choices, Black Oak hits the sweet spot,” says Ashley McCollum, Pittsburgh Paints Co. color marketing manager. “Instead of chasing trends, they’re gravitating toward colors that feel timeless and dependable, especially for outdoor projects that have to stand up to weather, wear and everyday life. Black Oak answers that call with ease. It isn’t about chasing what’s next, but choosing what lasts.”

As a semi-transparent stain, Black Oak is forgiving and durable, dark enough to hide dirt, scuffs, and wear, while still allowing the natural wood grain to shine.

“Black Oak is for homeowners who want confidence in their color choice, durability in their finish and a look they’ll still love long after the project is done,” says McCollum. “It’s one of those rare stain colors that doesn’t lock you into a single style. Its deep, neutral tone adapts easily whether your home leans classic, modern or somewhere in between.”

Whether prepping an outdoor space for hosting or making updates with the future in mind, McCollum recommends Black Oak to homeowners and DIYers with the following exterior styles:

• Modern Farmhouse: Black Oak adds contrast without feeling too stark. Ideal for decks, fencing, sheds, railings, pergolas, porch columns and porch ceilings, it pairs perfectly with white or soft neutral siding, black framing and metal accents to bring warmth and a clean, modern look.

• Contemporary and Modern: For homes with clean lines and minimal detailing, Black Oak brings depth without distraction. It feels intentional and architectural, especially alongside concrete, metal and large expanses of glass. McCollum suggests using it on privacy screens, accent fencing and entry doors.

• Craftsman and Traditional: Black Oak feels right at home with natural materials and classic details. It enhances wood grain and balances stone, brick and warm neutral exteriors. Black Oak shines on beams, posts, doors and porch railings.

• Rustic & Nature-Inspired: Inspired by aged wood and forest tones, Black Oak blends seamlessly into outdoor settings. It feels organic, grounded and perfectly suited for homes surrounded by greenery. McCollum recommends it on fencing, decks, pergolas and outdoor structures.

• Transitional (Old Meets New): For homeowners and DIYers who aren’t sure how to define their homes’ style, Black Oak thrives in that middle ground. It bridges classic and modern elements, making it a go-to choice for mixed materials and evolving spaces. McCollum suggests applying it to deck railings, accent walls and shutters.

• Coastal-Adjacent (Not Beachy): While it’s not a traditional light coastal stain, Black Oak works beautifully in coastal-influenced homes when paired with soft whites, sandy tones and natural textures—adding contrast and grounding the space. It works best in this environment on covered porches, fencing and doors.

Black Oak complements Pittsburgh Paints Co.’s 2026 Paint Color of the Year, Warm Mahogany (PPG1060-7), a rich, warm-toned red that is vivid enough to draw attention and reserved enough to make a timeless statement. Warm Mahogany and Black Oak pair well together for exterior projects due to their adaptability and nods of nostalgia.
