Introduction to the Development of Chinese Coatings Testing Standards

2024-02-27 10:01

The standardization work of China's coatings industry has been established since 1954 with reference to the standards of the former Soviet Union. In 1979, the China Coatings and Pigments Standardization Technical Committee (CSBTS/TC5) was established, which accelerated the process of adopting international standards and advanced foreign standards, mainly ISO standards and ASTM standards. A considerable number of method standards and product standards were formulated.

This article mainly introduces the current coatings testing method standards and mandatory standards in China.

Standard for coatings testing methods

At present, the Chinese coatings testing method standards are mainly divided into five categories based on the testing items.

Number

Performance classification

Secondary Performance classification

Parameters

1

Basic physical properties

Liquidity

Sampling, appearance, color, density, solid content, fineness, acidity, viscosity, storage stability, flash point, etc

Painting

Flow resistance, covering power, dryness, thickness, polishing ability, etc

2

Routine physical property testing of coating

Appearance and optical performance

Color, gloss, radiopacity, etc

Mechanical properties

Adhesion, flexibility, impact, cupping, hardness, wear resistance, washability, etc

Chemical resistance and corrosion resistance

Water resistance, chemical reagent resistance, stain resistance, heat resistance, temperature change, etc

3

Coating environmental test

Aging, salt spray, humid heat, yellowing, condensation, etc

4

Detection of toxic and harmful substances and prohibited substances

Benzene, methanol, halogenated hydrocarbons, depleting ozone substances, ethylene glycol methyl ether and derivatives of ethylene glycol methyl ether, phthalic acid vinegar, azo pigments, APEO (alkyl phenyl polyethylene ether), banned, polychlorinated biphenyls, formaldehyde, VOC, free diisocyanate vinegar, heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, trisubstituted organotin compounds, asbestos, radioactive materials, biological killing agents, etc

5

Special project testing for specialized coatings

Particle size, breakdown strength, electrical strength, etc

Compulsory standards

At present, China has successively formulated 7 mandatory standards for coatings, with specific information as follows.
