HZ info: China’s marine engineering coatings sector is poised for a critical breakthrough. Jiangsu Kuangshun Photosensitivity New-Material Stock Co., Ltd. (hereinafter "Kuangshun Photosensitivity") announced that its eco-friendly graphene-modified heavy-duty anticorrosive coating has entered the final stage of NORSOK M-501 international certification. The certification is expected to be completed by late June to early July. Upon approval, the product will enter the supply chain of China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), marking a historic "zero-to-one" breakthrough for domestic marine coatings.

The NORSOK M-501 standard, established by Norway’s petroleum industry for extreme North Sea conditions, sets higher technical thresholds than general ISO/ASTM standards. It mandates rigorous performance and testing protocols under harsh environments including high salinity, subzero temperatures, intense waves, UV radiation, persistent humidity, cyclic wet-dry transitions, and complex cathodic protection systems. Certification guarantees a protective lifespan exceeding 15–25 years for materials in extreme marine settings.

In the current heavy-duty anticorrosive coatings market, marine and ship coatings predominantly rely on zinc-based "sacrificial methods" for passive corrosion resistance. Kuangshun Photosensitivity employs an innovative "shielding method" using two-dimensional nanolayer structures for active protection. The graphene-modified lamellar architecture delivers high-performance, long-term defense while offering operational efficiencies: reduced surface preparation, high coating efficiency, and shortened recoating intervals. Its solvent-free, high-solid formulation further minimizes VOCs emissions, providing sustainable maintenance solutions that redefine industry standards and advance domestic substitution in the high-barrier marine coatings sector.

This technological breakthrough coincides with a strategic industrial transition period. China’s marine coatings market now exceeds RMB 40 billion, where giants like AkzoNobel and PPG dominate. Evolving demand drivers include aging offshore platforms requiring replacement. CNOOC alone operates over 50 offshore drilling platforms built in the 1970s–1980s, exceeding their 30-year design life. These structures undergo refurbishment at a rate of 10 platforms annually, creating vast opportunities for technological disruptors.

Despite positioning marine coatings as a strategic growth segment, Kuangshun Photosensitivity faced a revenue-growth-profit-mismatch in 2024. Annual reports show revenue reached RMB 518 million (up 1.63% YoY), with gross margin hitting a five-year high of 38.02%. However, a goodwill impairment of RMB 29.91 million from subsidiary Jiangsu Hongtai and electronic business challenges resulted in a net loss of RMB 32.06 million. Despite profit and operational cash flow pressures, the company’s competitive resilience remains underpinned by advancements in PCB photoresist localization, photovoltaic adhesive technology, and graphene anticorrosive innovations.

In the commercialization phase for heavy-duty anticorrosive coatings, Kuangshun Photosensitivity has established market pathways. Following batch orders for specialty valves and port facilities, the company now focuses on marine engineering equipment and energy/mining sectors in highly corrosive environments. Volume deployment with strategic large enterprises is projected to commence in Q3 2025.
