n Over 20 years of collaboration with the CSTM to promote science education
Beijing, China – July 15, 2025 – Today, BASF’s widely-loved Kids' Lab program arrived at its Beijing stop at the China Science & Technology Museum (CSTM). This year, BASF introduced two new experiments, “The Secrets of Batteries” and “The Magic of Electrolysis”, helping children understand the chemical reactions behind batteries and explore the various applications of electrolysis. From 15 to 20 July, children between 6 and 12 years old are welcome to register and take part in the program at the CSTM.
“More than 20 years ago, we launched the BASF Kids’ Lab program in China with Beijing as our first stop. We are delighted to work with the CSTM again and continue ushering children into the world of chemistry and lighting up their curiosity through this program,” said Marc P?tzsch, Vice General Manager, BASF Shanshan Battery Materials Co., Ltd., at the opening ceremony. “With the BASF Kids’ Lab program as a strong example and by joining forces with partners who share the same values, BASF will keep contributing to a thriving ecosystem for science education.”
“The BASF Kids’ Lab program has been an exemplary case of collaboration between the CSTM and companies, where we share resources and create synergy to contribute to science education,” said Qi Xin, Vice Director of the CSTM and Director of the Exhibition and Education Center. “We look forward to more collaborations with BASF, to develop more enriching materials for science education and lend our forces to talent development.”
This year, BASF Kids’ Lab’s journey continues in Taipei, Kaohsiung, Beijing, Zhanjiang, and Shanghai, attracting children from different cities to learn through customized and fun experiments. The program will also feature interactive displays exploring the history of different batteries and their applications in daily life, helping children map out the science behind and the connections between electrochemistry and daily life.
2025 marks the 140th anniversary of BASF in Greater China. As BASF continues to “Go far on our winning ways” in the country, the company actively promotes science education among children and raises public understanding of the chemical industry. For more than 20 years, the BASF Kids' Lab program has created lively spaces for over 210,000 school-aged children in Greater China to foster curiosity and exploration.
The experiments at the 2025 BASF Kids’ Lab in Beijing are:
The Secrets of Batteries (45 minutes, for children aged between 6-12)
The primary cell is the basic model for almost all batteries. It generates an electric current through the migration of electrons between reactants that occurs in a redox reaction. It generally consists of a positive and negative electrode with an electrolyte. But what does it take to light a bulb? In “The Secrets of Batteries” experiment, volunteers will guide children to choose the appropriate electrode material and electrolyte to build a primary cell. Children will feel the thrill of lighting up a small light bulb, and cherish the hard-won electricity.
The Magic of Electrolysis (45 minutes, for children aged between 6-12)
Electrolysis is a magical process where electrical energy is applied to trigger chemical reactions. It is used in a wide range of applications such as electroplating and the electrolysis of water to produce oxygen and hydrogen. In “The Magic of Electrolysis” experiment, children are encouraged to observe the electrolysis reactions taking place in various electrolytic solutions, and learn to grasp basic chemical concepts such as electrolytes and electrolytic reactions.
